The costumes for the two main protagonists were created in a small workshop in the Liège region.
Luc Besson and his filmography need no introduction. He is often surrounded by top actors and his films have budgets comparable to those of the biggest American blockbusters.
"Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" is a blockbuster with an all-star cast. It is the highest-budget European film of all time (estimated at €170 million) and was one of the summer's most eagerly awaited cinema outings.
Olivier Bériot, Valerian's chief costume designer, has an impressive CV and has worked with Luc Besson before. It was he who asked Laurent Couline to produce the costumes for Valerian and Laureline, played by Dane DeHaan and former catwalk star Cara Delevigne.
Laurent Couline was given 3D mannequins of the two actors' bodies; these could be dismantled so he could work on each part of the body separately. The artist first created sculptures from modelling clay and then a silicone mould that he could directly pour the polyurethane into in order to finalise the costumes.
The Liege resident already has experience in this area, as his small Milmort workshop has produced costumes for Beyoncé, the Moulin Rouge and Holiday on Ice.
